I honestly find Lisa the more selfish. He has, for however long they have been together, played WoW with her constantly, and understandably has become burnt out (as many of us do from time to time) and thus tried to find some way to entertain himself.
He has found something that has really made him excited and Lisa has shown little to no support of the whole thing and just focused on trying to get him to continue playing WoW.
As he has played WoW for years I find the fact he is chosing not to now shows more Lisa’s selfishness with regards to adapting to his choices rather than his unwillingness to maintain interest in hers….
I had to stop playing because of losing my job… Got a new one, but it’s not enough to pay that ridiculous $15 per month!
Although I’m not too sad about it. I mean, just when I thought Blizzard was going the right way with Cataclysm, they ruin it by nerfing the Firelands to a point where I can faceroll any class and one-shot DEATHWING…
Mary, what do you think about the Firelands? Did they screw it up as much as it seems?
I haven’t been there. Haven’t done any raids in Cataclysm actually! I play very casually these days. Ever since I started the comic. Not enough time! And our guild is a small group of RL friends, not enough to raid with. We’ve been running heroics lately.
Ah, that makes sense then. It seems WoW has become a more casual-based game lately, though. I remember TBC raiding, some of which was hard as nails. But my friend (who still plays WoW daily) has already defeated Fandral Staghelm more than once, just about facerolling his fire mage, and he’s seen the flamescythe drop 3 times. A little silly…
try playing an EU server, it’s $20/mo USD and the price fluctuates versus the euro, so it can be even more. I was having fun but eh, cut down on some bills for now attempting to save for moving half way across the country (I do actually live in the US lol).
I love that you and John play together, much like Renee and myself. This reminds me of a random we ran last night. A DPS had to drop because his wife was having pains. We said “Go ahead man RL is more important than WoW” then another dps said “What is this craziness? WoW>RL!!!” We all laughed and he left the group to tend to his wife. Keep up the good work
My husband and I drifted away from playing WoW, and we actually suffered for it. Even though we were playing other things (well, him more than me–I’ve been busy), we weren’t playing them *together.* Once we started making time to sign in together a little, our relationship improved again.
Also, I “love” the people who refer to my “WoW addiction” (I sign in twice a week, hour at a time tops) because I’ve played for so long, as they’re entering their 10th hour of Farmville for the 90th day in a row. Seriously, just because it’s an MMORPG doesn’t mean liking it is an addiction.
My wife and I enjoy the comic because it does tend to mirror us a bit. She’s played a rogue and won’t give it up to play anything else. I heal on all of my healy-toons. At the end of a raid night, we go to bed together, talking about how good we did and how we can improve, we make our own little strategies. I won’t say it’s the focus of our lives, especially with a little one on the way, but it does create a common bond we can both share in and grow together on. Will we play WoW forever? Probably not.. but for $30, the cost of two movie tickets and a bag of popcorn, we stay entertained and happy for a month. Not too shabby, imo.
Biggest challenge with quitting WoW for now is that there is no strong MMORPG alternative to WoW … GW2 will not be for several months more. I’m sure there are some people who will be dropping WoW the moment the new Star Wars MMORPG is live.
Awesome portrayal of this realization: that we’re more than our hobbies (or our addictions).
I love you for that, Mary.
You instantly reminded me of Alan Moore’s Watchmen: If opening the eyes of one’s audience can only be accomplished by the best comedians, then consider what it means to a webcomic writer and artist who does the same thing.
Hi,
Just found your comics recently and have been catching up. I know this one was from ages ago, but I just have to say that I love the last panel. Sometimes you really do just get so caught up in healz and deeps meters ad guides that you forget there is a world outside, and that you really are more than your priest/rogue/hunter!
Panel 1:
Mike: What's wrong? Why are you acting like this?
Lisa: You haven't played WoW with me at all this week.
Panel 2:
Mike: I know, I'm just excited about this board game, you know?
Lisa: And you're not excited about WoW? There's a new raid!
Panel 3:
Mike: No. I'm actually pretty bored...
Lisa: Of me?
Mike: No. Of WoW.
Lisa: But I play WoW.
Mike: But YOU AREN'T WoW.
Panel 4: (Just Lisa)
Lisa: I....I'm not?

A trifle selfish of Mike, in my opinion. Lisa plays his stupid board games for him, he should return the courtesy and play WoW with her.

/done with her essay-like opinion xD
GET OUT MIKE! GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
…ahem. As a recovering WoW addict, I really approve of this arc for Mike, and hope he stays this way, haha.
Haha, I applaud! The last panel encapsulates the joking nature of one of my previous college roommates quite well.
Sounds like the artist is finishing her addiction with world of warcraft and moving on to a different game.
Actually John and I have been playing more than usual lately.

…you mean… it might be safe to heal again? Possibly? Perhaps? *looks hopeful*

World of Warcrtaft monthly fee: $15.00
Latest Expansion: $59.00
Internet Service: $49.00
The face of her moment of realization: Priceless
And yes, the prices are just guesses…
My chap left playing wow with me and moved on to EvE, I know how she feels

Hey just started and caught up with the story (not in one day lol) and im rly liking this especially those 2 kitties.
I also was getting bored of wow…then there came a firey new land to kill sh-t in.

As an ex-WoW player: WOW.

Must. Maintain. Drip.
Great comic. Always look forward to the next one.
