War of the Ring is awesome but complicated, strategy + story.

I have a funny story with Small World… my mother bought it for my grandparents to keep for all us cousins to play, because she thought it looked like a nice game, “not like all those mean killing games you’re always playing.” Yeah, she totally missed the S in “It’s a world of sLaughter after all.”

Fortunately my cousins love it and we don’t fight while playing (not that we normally do when we play other things, either).

    • maryvarn

Haha yeah, Smallworld is beautiful but ruthless!

Actually your handwriting is pretty good and easy to read.

    • maryvarn

Hooray! It took me a while to make it legible. I was self-conscious about my handwriting in junior high school, when we’d pass notes. (Pre-texting days!) All the girls had bubbly pretty handwriting, but not me.

      • jules

Sounds like you’re the one who’s glad you use a font for the comic ;)
I brag about the “tower of board game power” anytime anyone talks about board games. We seriously need to play more Dominion.

        • maryvarn

          It’s true, about the font…

And Dominion dates! We gotta make ‘em! (Everyone, Jules here is our good friend and fellow Game of Thrones and DnD bud :D )

If I don’t see this when I go to Heaven, I’ll be disappointed.

  4. Hituro

You are right, Dominion is the best ever! After years of playing Settlers and the like with enthused fans it was brilliant to find a game I really really loved that they also loved/

    • dream

      Yes! Dominion is beyond awesome!!

  5. Megs

So many awesome games, but I can’t believe you’ve got Munchkin in your “haven’t played” pile! That’s the most awesome gamer geek game ever! Plus, you can get different genre decks and mix and match. Space Munchkin + Cowboy Munchkin = Firefly Munchkin!

    • maryvarn

I’ve played Munchkin actually, but not Munchkin quest. Most recently played Zombie Munchkin at PAX East! We don’t collect all the different themes, but I like it!

Where’s Trivial Pursuit? Best game ever and Canadian!!!

    • maryvarn

I always liked Trivial Pursuit! We have some form of it somewhere…

  7. Jamminkeys

If you are as addicted to Dominion as I am, you may be interested to know you can play it online:

I apologize in advance for destroying what free time you had left. ;)

Glad to see someone else out there with similar feelings towards Cranium as me! All my friends just think I’m weird.

    • maryvarn

Yeah I like Cranium, but I get very anxious when we play it. If ‘Star Performer” is the one with the singing I never select that one if I can help it.

I reccomend Alhambra if you haven’t played it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alhambra_(board_game)

You can get the “Big Box” version, which includes all of the expansions and you play a slightly different game each time, as you can mix and match the rules from the different xpacs.

    • maryvarn

Thanks, I’ll check it out! I wouldn’t be surprised if I ask John about it and he pulls it out of some dark corner I didn’t know about.

  10. Maevrim

Actually, I was wondering what super-cute font you’d used for this until I got to the bottom. :P You should market your handwriting, I’d use it.

Where is Monopoly?? And Chess! The most standard board games of all time and you don’t have them!

    • maryvarn

We probably have some little form of chess around, though we don’t have a fine set. Haven’t played it much. It’s intimidating! As for Monopoly, I think I played enough of that as a kid to last me a lifetime. :D

  12. BenScar

I don’t see any Carassonne in there, if there’s any space in your life for “just one more board game” give it a look :) There are many expansions available too.
(available on iPhone and iPad (Android as well I believe))

    CATAN!!!!!!!

That’s my new favorite game with my co-worker friends Lola and Simone :)

  14. Azalea

If you like Dominion that much, did you try Thunderstone? Same game mechanic but with a fantasy roleplay setting.

    • maryvarn

Yeah, we have it. We played it at Gen Con last year with the art director of it. It’s really cool! I still prefer Dominion, but Thunderstone is a very good twist. And it’s more than just a retheming because it introduces new mechanics, like killing monsters! Yay!

  15. justin

I am both impressed and jealous of your board game collection. There are some amazing games in there.

If you’re looking for another game to add to the “You should try this” list, I’d recommend checking out either Zombies!!! or the expansion, Zombies!!! 4.

    • maryvarn

Oh yeah, we have that too! It’s fun!

  16. Jesseca

Wow… my boyfriend and I used to use the same stand to hold all of our board games, but now we have a game closet! : )

  17. Rokas

Battletech! The awesome game of giant walking tanks blowing the crap out of each other in the 31st century!

Good stuff. Fun as heck if you’re a weirdo like me.

Clan Wolf in Exile will prevail!

  18. Tim

I don’t see apples to apples. It is the best party game ever. Here is a link to the wiki page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apples_to_Apples

    • maryvarn

Apples to Apples is what we prop our Xbox on. :D I have some other party games I prefer over it, but I agree that it’s really fun!
