Hi guys! I haven’t been posting much here other than the comics. Sorry! My March Mary Madness has finally ended, capped off by a wonderful trip to Iceland. My buffer has been obliterated, thus the absence of sketch previews, for now. But they’ll be back, because I really don’t do well psychologically without having at least a week buffer of comics.
Iceland was beautiful. If you’re interested you can check out my little write-up about it here. Just interested in the pictures? Here.
Welcome back any time! The south of Iceland is beautiful but there are many other places of unique scenery in the north-east and central highlands. Also, if you’re the hiking type, then the 2-4day “Laugarvegur” hike is a must.
You really should travel to the northern and western parts of Iceland, the nature there is extremely beautiful. In the western part there’s also a museum of magic, that is focused on the history of magic in the area.
Thanks for the recommendations! I’d love to go in the summer and experience the all-night sun and travel north and west and do some hiking. When we were there buses still didn’t go north and we kept hearing about dubious road conditions. What time of year did you two visit? (Or maybe you live there??) Do you think they were just scaring us with the road condition warnings?
I live in Iceland. The weather hasn’t really been a good friend lately here and when it’s as wet as it has been the roads can be tricky. But in the summertime you can get to most of the main towns and villages with just a normal car.
The warnings are probably mainly due to the fact that a lot of tourists rent cars and take them on dirt roads when they have no experience with those conditions, then they often drive too fast and get in trouble.
The western part of Iceland is my favorite part (but then I’m biased since I was born there :p) and I highly recommend it. The roads there are not quite as good as in or around the capital but are pretty decent.
This is a video a local guest house made about my favorite place http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeTRRUfSfys you should definitely check it out if you visit Iceland again.
nah the south of Iceland is better than the west, as my family is from there!
Okok, the whole island is great. I agree with Bainoth though on the roads. You can get to practically all small towns from Akureyri in the North to Vík in the south just with a regular car and winter tyres all year round (maybe a few stormy days are the exception) if you just drive carefully and not too fast. Hell, I do that and I only own a hatchback.
As for buses not going north, I wonder who told you that. There is no place in Iceland that is out of touch from the rest of the country during winter (again, might take a day to clear the roads after a heavy snow storm) via bus. You can also get to see a lot of the country at slightly cheaper rates than high summer by coming in may or september and still have good weather.
You seem to have at least a few Icelandic readers so next time you are thinking of coming give a heads up and ask for tips.
Ooh, you both live there! As for a heads up, I did! On my twitter feed, a couple times.
I’ll try to make a post here about it next time I go somewhere of consequence for the non twitter peeps.
Thanks for the suggestions both of you! Hopefully I can get back at some point in my life. It sure is easy from New York. About the buses, it may have just been certain tours that weren’t running when I was there. I’m not sure about public transport. And yeah, we went down to Vik in the bus and thought the roads were just fine. There was just one stop at a glacier that regular cars weren’t allowed. We even picked up a couple in a rental car there to take them closer.
Hah! Great to find other EVE players out there. I really wish I could have made Fanfest. What’s your EVE character name?
Oh no, I don’t play EVE. Just happened to be there when Fanfest was going on. Would like to try it though!
Ah alright. Could toss you a 20 day free trial if you’re interested. It’s a rather intensive game and can take a bit of time to learn.
Yeah, I’ve heard as much, which is why I still haven’t tried it.
Thanks for the offer! I’ll let you know if I get some free time to take advantage of it.
*cries* who killed the cupcake?!?!?!
