Transcript:
Panel 1: Close on Mike in his Dungeon Master costume.
Mike: You’re surrounded by a band of scruffy kobolds. Roll initiative.
Panel 2: Long panel, showing all the players. Chloe and Bink are perched on the back of the couch, watching.
Jenny (to Lisa, pointing at Patrick): Is that the cure boy you promised me? I thought there would be more. And cuter.
Lisa: Fan of Knives! Fan of Knives!
Kendra: FoKing Rogues.
Patrick: I join with the Kobolds and unleash a wave of fiery candles upon you!
Mike is facepalming.
That’s because Chaotic Neutral IS Chaotic Evil. In the books, there’s a difference… but in actual games, the only type of player who makes a “chaotic neutral” character is one who’s planning to be Chaotic Evil at the first opportunity.
Not always, but often enough that you should watch out for it. Does typically mean that they’re planning to f”**K over the other players in various ways.
oooh this reminds me of my D&D group i tried and tried teaching them about initiative, saving throws, rounds, but when the fighting came in, one guy would always go in a crazy killing mode, while the others would stare randomnly at me when i would say roll initiative
Don’t forget it could be worse. There could also be the person who attempts in the interest of honorable politics to try and negotiate with the enemy.
Because: you never know when 8 foot tall green skinned predators can be pursuaded to leave peacefully in exchange for a snack bar and a shiny ball of glass.
I KNEW IT I FREAKIN CALLED IT check my comment about patrick on http://www.npccomic.com/2010/09/20/player-3/
i said “i bet he turns tail and scarifices one of you as soon as mike rolls the dice
” CALLED IT
He didn’t turn tail. He betrayed the group and is now actively helping the kobolds, not sacrificing. I will to take away your “CALLED IT” card and give you a “CAPS LOCK” warning. One more mistake and it’s off to “Jail” for your top hat.
Despite not having done much D&D, I can understand this comic pretty well. Funny thing is, I feel like I’m in-between the game generations, understanding both to an extent, despite being a younger gamer.
@ElderCor: I’ve never seen one of those debates, and I would know because I’d join in on one. o_O Are those mostly on PvP realms, or am I just on the wrong realm and/or faction?
Everyone rolls initiative at the beginning of a fight to determine the turn order. The DM also rolls initiative for the monsters (here, the kobolds) so he knows which order they go in as well.
soo…. does the highest roll go first or something? also TV series question, why does the dungeon master always appear just in time for them not to die but never bothers to take them home
Fan of knives can delay firey candles but it does more harm than good by splitting the candles up into double the amount of candles, after enough splits they form the candle hydra
If you put a fence, it becomes an hospice
If you cover it, it becomes a circus ^^
save roll save roll
I think they would’ve been better off with Bink and Chloe as players.
I feel Mike’s pain. Not as much as Mike is right there, but I feel some of it.
Where are the sandwiches?
You no take candle?
^ Win for Whimzee
Fan of kinves?
You said chaotic neutral not chaotic evil. Backstab the wizard.

Lol Wow dont belong in D&D, got to love this 1 ;P
Being Dungeon Master is ridiculosly hard, spesh trying to keep all players happy. Poor mike, put Lisa in a cupboard with her DS
oooh this reminds me of my D&D group i tried and tried teaching them about initiative, saving throws, rounds, but when the fighting came in, one guy would always go in a crazy killing mode, while the others would stare randomnly at me when i would say roll initiative
just to let you know you misspelled Knives as Kinves when lisa said it twice top one was spelled ok though bottom was not
oh mui gawd!!! THERE IS THREE NOT ONE BUT THREE CUPCAKES THERE
… and they’re staring raptly at Jenny.
Will Jenny succumb to their frosted allure? Will the kobolds keep their candles? Will Kendra-the-Warden manage to keep the craziness from escaping?
Tune in Thursday for another exciting installment of: NPC!
Thanks for the “kinves” tips.
Fixed!

I feel his pain, that’s like every modern DM’s worst nightmares in one place.
I’m waiting for one of them to check the party’s GS and start another trade-chat-style holy war about GS vs. Skill…
I’m a fan of knives as well

Honest question: what the heck is a roll initiative
Everyone rolls initiative at the beginning of a fight to determine the turn order. The DM also rolls initiative for the monsters (here, the kobolds) so he knows which order they go in as well.
I had no idea either until I started playing.
soo…. does the highest roll go first or something? also TV series question, why does the dungeon master always appear just in time for them not to die but never bothers to take them home
In the transcript, you misspelled the word cute, you have cure
Fan of knives can delay firey candles but it does more harm than good by splitting the candles up into double the amount of candles, after enough splits they form the candle hydra

I do believe that this made my night. GOOD JOB! *cyber hug* (they exist)
I feel his pain…
It might be easier if all the players had character sheets and dice.
