Panel 1: Lisa is seated, looking at her iPhone 4.
Lisa: I’m just loving my new iPhone 4. The front-facing cam is so cool!
Panel 2: Close up on Lisa’s face
Panel 3: iPhone 4.
Panel 4: Closer on iPhone 4.
Panel 5: Very close on iPhone 4 now, particularly on the camera.
Seemingly from the iPhone 4 front facing camera: Daisy, Daisy, Give me your answer, do….
Panel 6: Lisa takes off, leaving the iPhone behind! Bink peers out from behind the chair.
Bink: Heh heh, sucker.
Ah, then the tuppeny tour, for those who didn’t get the joke.
These are references to HAL, the computer in 2001, A Space Odyssey. The camera lens on the iPhone and the bevel around it highly resemble the image used to represent the presence of the computer in the movie.
HAL was a computer that was “taught”, and “grew experientially”, thus involving heuristics. “Daisy” was one of the first few things it learned. At the end of the movie, the main character dismantles the computer. One of the last things the computer does on its way down is sing “Daisy, daisy”. Thus, regressing through its “childhood”. It was a creepy scene, and having a computer-something start quoting “Daisy” at you would definitely bring back memories of 2001… if you’d seen it.
the only things i can think of right now are like completely off topic and have absolutely nothing to do with this, so…. nice job……..wait…. oh crap….. i think i forgot if she’s lisa or mary XD cause isnt lisa so supposed to be her or something?
I watched that movie, from beginning to end, cause so many tv shows, movies, shorts, and comics kept referencing it, and I was sick and tired of not getting it.
though I do admit, it was boring, (that’s probably because I thought it was a sci-fi thriller/action flick IN SPACE), and I didn’t really get the end or the black monolith.
I had to consult Wikipedia for the title.. I’m not ashamed, but now my head hurts. I really shouldn’t look up words like that after a painful day at work.
iPhone and two cats… have you tried Cat Physics on your iPhone yet? It is currently free! It is a puzzle game where you pass the ball from one cat to another. I’ve finished it and I highly recommend it!
Another one you might like (Windows only demo unfortunately so I haven’t tried it) Dustforce! – has a sort of Lode Runner feel to it from the video, but with more leaping… here’s a short interview with the artist – http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/08/dustforce-interview.ars
I remember the Disney Recess episode in which SAL, a deranged A.I. that was supposed to learn through experience, took over the school and how it was destroyed was through going back, through it’s past experiences, and in the end it “sang” a song along the lines “School Days, School days…”
from the looks of it … you really are into iphone folders arent you? i only have one, and its the games folder…
and yes, your camera talking to you is creepy *nod*
Yeah dude! I have a lot of apps!
She’s a bit paranoid.
Love the 2001: A Space Odyssey HAL reference! Great comic. I feel DIGG in your future. Better get ready for the DIGG effect!
If anyone submits, let me know so I can tweet about it.
Is it a good thing that I don’t understand this comic?
you are not alone. went right over my head too.

For more, look up “HAL 9000″ on wikipedia.
Yeah sorry, I figured I’d lose a few people on this one…
Thanks for the explanation, Eirik.
..I never finished that boring movie. But yay for murderous computers.
Blasphemy!
I’m sorry dave, i cant take that picture,
LOL
Hal reborn, I love it. Also, I’m extremely jealous of ur Gen Con trip. (Mainly cuz u got to meet Tracy Hickman)
Oh I didn’t get to actually meet him unfortunately. Just went to the Hickman’s Killer Breakfast, so got to see him perform.
still jealous
Hello! I’m your new phone and I just tickled pink to see you!

She’s Lisa!
I’m Mary!
We are not the same….though there’s no denying we share similarities…
I think that Mary’s artist uses superior inks and media, though…
I just got my (first) iPhone 4 two days ago, so this one was extra funny for me
Probably due to my not buying overprized gadgets, I have no clue what this is about.
As for HAL, I fell asleep during that one, so I have no idea what the reference was about either.
I watched that movie, from beginning to end, cause so many tv shows, movies, shorts, and comics kept referencing it, and I was sick and tired of not getting it.

Reading the book helps some. The sequel (book only) explains why HAL behaved as he did, too, which helps more.

the top right icon in your folders looks like the uss enterprise ncc-1701! or am i reading too much into this?
My question is, what is Bink going to do with the phone now?
Just a bit of trivia concerning HAL. It was one letter off from the big computer giant at the time IBM. H>I A>B L>M .
Welp, new reader here, I love your comic! Gotta love the massive APP pwnage the Iphones have xD
Cool! Thanks and welcome!
I got the reference. How can people not? This one’s definitely one of my faves.

HAL9000! <3 I used to have a crush on him…
