Poll: Did you buy the WoW in-game pets?
By maryvarn on June 24th, 2010Posted In: NPC Blog,Polls,World of Warcraft
Given the topic of recent comics, I figured this poll was in order. Have at it! And feel free to share you thoughts on the matter of micro-transactions in MMOs in the comments, whether or not you’re a WoW player. The poll will close Monday evening and I’ll do a post about the results and my own pet-buying habits next week.
Oh, and if you don’t know what I’m talking about, see for yourself here.

1st comment and voter? that’s a first…I was also hoping to see the winged giraffe, but I guess an otter pup will do..
got them all, saving up for CE Pets
I’m a huge collector, have 120 or so. I bought the $10 ones but not the plushies and pets, too much money even for me. I want them though =(
I bought all of them. Even treated the fiance to a few.
I bought the mount because it’s an easy way to avoid having to ride a stupid elephant on all of my current and future draenei characters, but I don’t see the point of buying the minipets since minipets offer no in-game benefit in the way a mount does. I’m calling that “I bought some of them.”
I dont own any of them, but thats because i cant afford to spend money on it. I want them very badly however. Sadly, nobody got me any of them for my 25th birthday today.
I wouldn’t pay for a pet, but my boyfriend got me Lil XT and another friend got me the baby gryphon.
I bought my ex the Pandaren Monk (and Lil’ K.T. for me) which is annoying because now we’ve split up, he doesn’t play any more and I can’t get the panda back! (Yes, I asked Blizz and everything)
£9 for the pets is sorta ok, but I can’t bring myself to pay £17 for a sparkle pony, mostly because I think they’re surprisingly ugly. But I want the windrider plushie…
i bought all the pets and the mount EXCEPT lil XT
Does my Core Hound Pup count? It’s the only pet I ever use, hehe. Otherwise, not really, even though me and a friend are going to be working on our 310% mounts tonight.
I bought the mount not the pets, I got a VISA giftcard as a rebate for my new phone and those things are not always useful in real stores so I tend to use them online. There was enough on the card to buy airtime (free month of playing!–sort of) AND the sparkle pony, I couldn’t resist
I do collect the pets though, I have just enough to get the fawn, and I’ve been looking at the ones I don’t have yet…
probly will but the mount but not the pets
I got the Core Hound Pup when I bought my authenticator, so I’m not sure that counts. The little guy is, to me, just proof to others that I have the authenticator.
I think packaging pets/mounts along with real world gadgets is a great marketing strategy, which in the case of the authenticator also fights hackers (a huge plus). And I’m willing to bet that the gamer ladies and younger kids are the main market.
I’m just waiting for WoW pets in a Happy Meal. Maybe when the movie comes out.
I bought the Pandaren Monk when it came out, though I wish I had not. Wasn’t worth it, and it seems to have encouraged Blizz to do more of them.
Especially don’t like the mount. Nowadays they’re all over Dalaran.
I collect pets and mounts in-game, but I refuse to purchase them for real money. Blizzardvision already makes enough off of us as it is. Also, in my eyes, buying them would diminish the value of the mounts/pets I worked so hard to collect already. (I have 87 mounts and 86 pets, or is it the other way around?)
*sigh* We’ve given Blizzard way too much money lately, as my husband and I had to have our own pets and mounts…but I do adore the windrider cubs, in and out of game.
I’m mostly a pet & mount collector (especially mounts), but generally speaking I do not wish to pay real money for them. But, where is this line drawn? I currently have a Grunty space murloc that I got at Blizzcon. Obviously I could sell it for a good amount…so if I use it, I’m essentially spending money that I could have for it. Hence, RL money for virtual items. But then, I’m really kind of spending someone else’s money as it was a gift for going to the con.
However, I’d far rather have a sparkle pony instead of it anyhow. So if I sell it for sparkle pony money, am I using someone else’s money or my own? I’m not sure…I just know I’d far rather have a sparkle pony than the murloc anyday.
I bought one pet as a gift for my gf
Bought the mount but not the pet. Because now no character of mine has to ride a bone-jarring raptor or Arthas-awful giant chicken.
I collect them when I can, but I simply cannot buy the pets or mount, for I have no creditcard to purchase them with QQ
I’m with Kiryn – I bought the mount so I don’t have to ride an Elekk/Kodo.
I bought the pandaren monk (kung-fu panda + charity donation = win!) and lil’ KT but stopped there. I occasionally ponder the sparkle pony, but probably will pass.
I bought the mount (Celestial Steed), because it’s actually useful and saves grinding for cash. But not the pets. (And for some reason you’re missing mount-but-not-pets from the poll).
I always fail to anticipate all the answers…that’s why I always have the “other” option.
Paying for something like that just seems like cheating…
Bought the mount but non of the pets. I felt that it served a use I could justify spending the cash on. I do fail to see how it is cheating though.
I love mount pet collecting. I did get the mount but haven’t bought any of the pets yet. I might get the 10 dollar ones since that’s affordable, but probably not the 25 dollar ones.
I bought stardust pony because there aren’t great ‘magey’ mounts, esp. before max level….you can’t get a cool mount without achievements or a rep grind.
I’m ok with these transactions as long as they aren’t game-changing
I picked up the Pandaran Monk when a small portion of the proceeds was going to charity, and I bought the sparkle pony, so I never have to buy an in-game mount again!
The only one I’ve been tempted to buy is the plushy ones. Mostly cause I get the awesome plushy.
The pet is more a side effect of it.
I resist the urge because those are some seriously expensive plushies.
I bought the pony so I never have to buy an alt a mount again, it was practical and I think it’s pretty. I haven’t bought any pets and doubt I ever will.
Man, I really did fail at anticipating all the bought-the-mount-but-not-the-pets people! I guess I just haven’t seen it as much on my server and I thought there was a backlash against it due to the cost. Well I guess there is a backlash, but that of course isn’t everybody!
I’m not interested in paying money beyond my subscription for in-game items.
I did buy the Wind Rider Cub and Griffon Cub for my wife because she thinks the stuffed animals are so adorable (I have to agree). She used the code for the in-game versions, but that was just an extra for her. She was really interested in the stuffed ones.
Bought XT, KT, and the mount because I liked them.
If I like something, and it’s within my means to acquire it, I acquire it. Not seeing why this is such a problem to people…
I bought Lil’ K.T. and the Pandaran Monk the day they came out. I’ll admit it was an impulse buy, but I don’t regret it.
I got the Wind Rider Cub, Gryphon Hatchling and Authenticator/Core Hound as a birthday gift. Not sure if I will buy the Celestial Steed though. When I first saw it I was in awe. lol That ended after seeing 10 in the span of a few minutes.
In regards to paying for things like this, I’m curious as to what you think about a game like Sims 3 where there is a lot of content you can buy for cash. All sorts of household items, clothes, hair styles etc…. Registering the game gives you free credit for the store. That’s the only reason I bought anything. Now of they offered different cars, that would be a different story. lol
The mount provides a technical advantage for gameplay, especially if you have lots of alts: you never need to buy an ingame mount again. For $10, that is probably not just a good price, but a smart investment, especially for newer players. If I was at 99 mounts, I’d probably buy it just to save the grind for the 100th.
I think some people get sore over the issue because of the illusion that if Bliz wasn’t making these pets, they could have have made more actual content.
I just wanted to share that I got the Pandaren monk as a birthday present from my then-GM/really good friend for the last 2 years. He then proceeded to buy me the celestial steed because I told him I was at 99/100 mounts. I’m surprised more people haven’t gotten these as gifts, they seem like nice presents. Especially the adorable plushies!
I got Lil KT, the monk, and the steed. Definitely don’t want any goofy elephant mount.
On a related matter, I collect unusual hunter pets, too. Rare spawns, spirit beasts, and entirely unique models, etc. My main has Gondria, Loque’nahak, King Bangalash, and more, and an alt has the Ghost Saber and Snarler the rare spawn wolf. I’m extremely tempted to tame the core hound boss from Molten Core, too. (It’s possible, I’ve actually seen someone with it, lol.) I also have to laugh every time my friend freaks out about me having a black tabby companion pet. I got several real cheap on the AH one day, and they’ve never been anywhere near that low since. Saved one for myself and sold the rest on the AH for a profit. XD
I have planned to purchase the pets since they do appeal to me. The mount has been a consideration. Since money is very tight for me I have not purchased these. My directed my funds to Starcraft II and Blizzcon. Since the pets are there for a while I do not feel rushed to obtain them. I have obtained the ones with the plush but it was because the plush are limited and I really liked them. I am hoping to purchase two more sets if able to.
I played WoW a for a couple of years. But, the people I usually play wiht (a group of local friends I also play D&D with) moved to Lord of the Rings, I moved there as well. The buying of pets for real dollars started after I left. But I did own a couple of in game pets, mostly the ones you could get as a quest reward.
I don’t have the purchasable mount or pets yet, but I do plan on getting them.
