and here I always thought it was pronounced “pown”? Never been a fan of that “word” no matter how many MMO’s I’ve played…
I pronounced it pown too, but I know people who say pawn. My theory is that someone meant to type “own” and hit the p instead of an o, and thus, a meme was born.
I heard that ‘pwn’ is short for ‘power own’. But your theory makes sense as well.
pwn was born as a typo, just like teh and other similar terms.
I pronounce it as own.
back in the good ol’ days of text based MUD’s (yep, i was there), pwn or pown meant ‘player owned’ – which was really talking about higher level d-bags running around killings newbies for fun. guess it still applies in MMO’s today.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I think you’re right – it should be “pown.” I’ll change it. I think it would be typed “pwn” But I was going for how it would be pronounced, and I got it wrong.
Me, I do pronounce it “pawn”. And yep, I saw it as “spelled as pronounced” in the original. … but then, I didn’t comment “ya spelt it rong!”
