Before I picked up WoW, my MMORPG was a small "top down" game called Mystic Realms of Allhanzar. Graphics were junk, practically text... like playing NetHack. However, the mechanics of the game, advancement, character development, combat, economics, etc were as good if not better than even Warcraft. (I used to blog that it was the "best non-squaresoft combat engine". Relatively speaking, Warcraft does well at exposing some of the nuts and bolts and being more than just a graphical hack and slash game. The best players really dig in and work the numbers to the best of their abilities. The great graphics don't hurt though. :)

A friend of mine has that same game and we've played it several times (it's a great little game). I think boardgames are making a bit of a comeback. Looking at http://boardgamegeek.com you can see a big following of people that still love them.

My wife and I are members of a few local boardgame groups and we get together often to turn off the TV, the computers, etc... and break out some boardgames. We don't often do RPGs, but some members do on their own (we also don't often play Warhammer or the like, but I do on my own). If you are looking for groups, I've found that http://meetup.com tends to have groups in cities all over.

I have my video games too, but they'll never replace my table top games.
